Black-headed gulls, or Bonaparte’s gulls, have a distinct feather pattern that makes them easy to spot on many of NC’s beaches. These gulls will try to steal your chips and side-eye your sandwich, but they are essential in the coastal ecosystem: reducing the spread of disease with their scavenging behavior.
